Venturing out from its home at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra (LBSO) presents the “Sounds & Spaces” series to broaden its audience and expand its artistic services to the larger Long Beach community. On Sunday, May 6, 2:00 PM the LBSO will present a live performance of one of Igor Stravinsky’s most loved and virtuosic works, “The Soldier’s Tale”, at the Art Theater of Long Beach (2025 East 4th). The concert is open to the public and is a one-time opportunity to see the celebrated Long Beach Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players FREE, however reservations must be made to assure admission. Long Beach hosts a rich and varied environment of intriguing buildings, many of which contain surprising performance venues. Sounds & Spaces explores some of these historic landmarks and gardens by matching them with exciting chamber music performances that celebrate the beauty and character of Long Beach. The music is performed by the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, a group drawn from members of the Orchestra and led by Gary Bovyer and Julie Feves. These events are provocative and intimate, with opportunities to interact with the musicians and the locations. Each event includes a spoken presentation on the venue and how the music relates to it. The concerts are informal, of modest length, with no intermission.

“The Soldier’s Tale” tells a story of wealth, love, lost innocence and the Devil, narrated by TV and film actor Steve Stapenhorst and accompanied by a pit band comprised of Long Beach Symphony principal players. Written in 1918 this dramatic and compelling piece, rarely heard in its entirety, finds a perfect venue in the beautifully restored Art Theater of Long Beach. John Thomas, President of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, will give a brief talk on the architecture. The 2011-2012 inaugural season of Sounds & Spaces is funded by the generosity of the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association and Los Angeles County Arts Commission. The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra is also seeking funding from select individuals to sustain an inclusive atmosphere of connecting Long Beach’s illustrious Sounds with its distinctive Spaces.
