Steve Mazan from the film, “Dying to do Letterman” will be appearing live one night only at The Art Theatre [2025 East 4th Street, LBC], along with a group of his funny friends to benefit The American Cancer Society.

Host:
Chris Adams

Headliner:
Steve Mazan

Line-Up:
Jerry Brandt
Anthony Browning

The film, “Dying to do Letterman”, is the story of what happens when Steve, a comedian, learns he is dying of cancer and instead of losing hope he dedicates his life to living his dream: performing comedy on The Late Show with David Letterman. This life-affirming, funny documentary chronicles his amazing five-year journey, as he races his own ticking clock to achieve the seemingly impossible goal.

In the decade since starting in the great San Francisco comedy scene, Steve has played clubs, colleges and corporate events across America. In addition, to reaching his dream of performing on David Letterman’s show, he’s been a repeat guest on Craig Ferguson, Byron Allen and the Bob & Tom Show.

With influences ranging from Richard Pryor to Fozzie Bear, Steve has formed a unique style that bridges the gap between clever and goofy. His material offers layers that leave an audience howling and thinking at the same time. He is Smart and Silly. Daft and thoughtful. Intelligent and ridiculous, but always clever. And clean. Mostly.

Part of the proceeds will go to The American Cancer Society.

The Long Beach Cinematheque is proud to present the Long Beach premiere of the new documentary SEARCHING FOR ELLIOTT SMITH, with an in-person Q&A following the film with director Gil Reyes, animator Jennifer Cuellar, and Jennifer Chiba, Elliott Smith’s fiancée, on Friday, May 20th at the Art Theatre of Long Beach.

The evening will start at 8pm with a half hour set of acoustic Elliott Smith covers by Alyssandra Nighswonger, David Sinclair Robison, and Merrady. The film will begin at 8:30pm after an introduction by director Gil Reyes, and will be followed by a Q&A.

The Long Beach Cinematheque will be donating a portion of the evening’s proceeds to Union Rescue Mission, dedicated to a cause championed by Elliott Smith and the filmmakers, the care of Los Angeles’ population of homeless men, women and children.

Tickets are $11, and are available at the Art Theatre box office or at their website.

From the filmmakers: Elliott Smith’s intensely intimate songs helped popularize lo-fi, indie-rock: A traditionally underground genre until Smith’s mainstream effort “Miss Misery” took Hollywood by surprise. But even after an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, he managed to fly mostly under the radar. And Smith wanted it that way. After his suicide in 2003, Smith’s peers avoided the media. Granting very few print interviews and NO on-camera interviews. Until now. From his high school days as a National Merit Scholar, to his early work in the Portland rock band, ‘Heatmiser’, to critical acclaim… to his mysterious death at the age of 34. We learn the dark motivations behind a musical genius. And discover how psychic pain can also produce timeless art.

“A tribute to a man who through all his shortcomings had a beautiful soul, and positively impacted friend and fan alike.” – Zach Jensen, LAist

After lengthy discussions and wanting to do something meaningful for the family and the neighborhood, the 4th Street Business Improvement District has decided to offer a reward of $1,000 as an incentive for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects still at large. Additionally, the BID has established a Chip-In fund to raise additional funds from individual businesses and the community for the victim’s family.

What began as a sales rep agency in 2000, quickly grew into a full-fledged design studio and boutique-style showroom offering custom furniture, specialty lighting and interior design services. For many years the business operated from a Los Angeles showroom as a “to the trade only” business. In 2005, they expanded into a warehouse/office space in Long Beach, eventually consolidating both showrooms into one in Long Beach, and eventually expanding into its current 4th Street retail locale. This month, TREBOR/NEVETS celebrates its milestone 10th anniversary with a soiree at its 4th street showroom [2116 E. 4th], Saturday, November 20th, 7-10 PM featuring live music, tasty bites and fresh libations.

“TREBOR/NEVETS is comprised of partners Robert Murphy and Steven Sarinana, who have a combined 30-years experience in the home furnishings and decor industry. While Steven serves as creative director, Robert maintains the operations of the business, as well as provides exceptional service to customers in the retail environment. Both partners have experience in working at high-end designer showrooms and serving a discriminating clientele. Steven has extensive experience in working directly with artisans to create custom furnishings for clients as well many years of working with antique & vintage furnishings. As a certified antique appraiser, Steven also has a unique eye in pairing new and vintage/antique items in a way that speaks to how we live today.

“We are known to our clients for our Classic Contemporary style and for a well edited high-end collection of unique and original items,” offered Sarinana. “From the start, we have offered custom, one of a kind of limited edition home furnishings, whether in our own lines of custom lighting and upholstery, or in the restoration of our vintage finds we strive to show that simple clean lines can be elegant and sophisticated.”

Seeing the economic and cultural growth happening in Long Beach—and on 4th Street in particular—TREBOR/NEVETS moved its hub and home to the unique, not-so-‘Retro Row’ destination district in the mid-2000s.

“Starting from a home/office, which eventually became an office/home, TREBOR/NEVETS has always had roots in Long Beach,” added Sarinana. “In 2005, we moved into a warehouse space with an office on 3rd and Elm, as well as keeping our Los Angeles showroom open to the trade. Seeing an opportunity in Long Beach, with the expansion of new urban living and the need for more boutique style home decor retailers, we decided to expand onto 4th Street. Six months after moving into our existing location, we expanded yet again, doubling our presence on this very busy and vibrant street. In an effort to focus on the growing demands for interior design and specialty items, we decided to grow our presence in Long Beach by consolidating the two showrooms and focusing on the retail/design portion of the business. It’s been a very positive move all around.”

Over the past decade, TREBOR/NEVETS has collected its share of famous clientele, participated in many A-list events, and has sold to various noted set designers. It products have been featured in numerous movies and TV shows including HGTV’s “Design Star”, and on the debut season of Kathy Griffin’s “My Life on the D List” (episodes 1 & 2) in 2005. Some of its famous clientele include Kim Coles, Sarah Michelle Geller, Raquel Welsh, and Ashley Judd. TREBOR/NEVETS has also provided custom furniture and designed items for high-profile affairs including MTV Awards after-parties, Oscar gifting suites at the Luxe Hotel in Beverly Hills, the Showcase House in Pacific Palisades with noted architect Richard Landry, and the first-ever Los Angeles Esquire House, also with Landry. “This house was host to many celebrity fundraisers,” Sarinana recalled, “including a poker party hosted by Ben Affleck, Penny Marshall’s birthday party hosted by Rosie O’Donnell, and the Surfrider Foundation event featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers!”
